Bathroom Counter Hacks
These tips are working for us, so I wanted to share with you! 3 embarrassing realities followed by 3 easy solutions.
Embarrassing reality #1:
My kids were leaving hand towels all over the bathroom. We live in Florida. It's humid here. Towels wouldn't dry on the hook, so the kids would go to dry their hands and be grossed out by the damp towel and just throw them on the floor.
Our Solution:
So we set up a two basket system, and switched to smaller wash cloths to use just one time instead.
Here's a picture. I'll explain it below.
Here's how it works:
We have a small basket labeled clean and another labeled dirty. We put our clean, folded wash cloths in the clean basket. After we dry our hands, we put that wipe directly into the dirty basket. When it gets full, we dump it in the rest of the laundry. When the clean basket gets empty, we fill it from the drawer.
Some unexpected advantages to this system:
- Wash cloths dry faster than hand towels.
- Wash cloths are less expensive than hand towels.
- Even our toddler understands how this system works now.
- Our kindergartner and second grader feel confident folding washcloths alone, and even help their toddler sister to fold them.
-No more slimy hand towels!

Now, about that soap.
Embarrassing reality #2:
Our kids over-use liquid soap. Bar soap lasts a lot longer around here. But it was always slimy.
Our Solution:
You may notice in this picture that the bar of soap is balanced on its end /side.
Our bar soap was always wet and slimy, even with a quality soapdish with drainage. Eventually we figured out that if we set it upright and let it dry out between uses, it lasted longer. It's less messy than a dish, and easier for those little hands to grab and use.

"How do you keep your bathroom so clean?" I always have to laugh when someone tells that to me. They don't know how bad it can get around here.
Embarrassing reality #3:
Our bathrooms get filthy, fast.
Our Solution:
When I'm around during the day, I can keep them tidier easier. When I use that one-time washcloth to dry my hands, I wipe down the counter and faucet and sink basin with it, too. These regular wipe downs keep things from getting yucky, fast.
