ABC Order
Can you sing your ABC's?
Have you ever tried alphabetizing?
Let's make our spelling feel more "real". Today we're putting our spelling words in alphabetical order.
We have our alphabet laid out with little cards. Then we have our spelling words written out on larger cards.
We organize our spelling words to fit beside each letter.
Oh no!
What happens when we have more than one word for a letter?
We look at the next letter in our word, then put those in alphabetical order, too.
It's fun to move around while we're working.
Textures and Letters
Oh! We have our sandpaper letters. They're cards we made ourselves. We took red and blue cardstock. We cut out letters from sand paper. Then we thought about what letters are vowels and what letters are consonants. We glued the vowel letters to red cardstock and consonants to blue cardstock.
And another with our 2 year old.
Let's sing our ABC's and feel each letter as we go. After feeling our letters, let's draw some letters in our salt tray.
Do you remember how to finger spell our alphabet? Let's practice finger spelling each of our words in ASL, too!
Oh, let's go ahead and write down our spelling words in alphabetical order. It's so easy now!
Cursive
Hey, do you want to write your words or letters in cursive, too? I'll show you what it looks like and you can decide if you want to write them out like me. I want you to be able to read the words in cursive, and other fonts, too. Do you like picking up your pencil between letters? I don't. I like having each letter flow into the next, with breaks between words. Our 10 year old decided to practice her cursive in our salt tray. Here's a photo.
Why?
How does this sort of work help us with math, science, and engineering? When we do this activity, we are practicing:
Sequence
Order
Organization
As we sing, we notice more. We become excellent observers of things like:
Pitch
Rhythm
Volume
As we move our fingers to finger spell we improve our finger strength and dexterity. It will make it easier for us to hold our pencil and give us strength to write!
Written Communication
When we communicate clearly and effectively, we become better at all we do. Written communication is tricky for a lot of scientists and engineers. By becoming strong writers we can set ourselves apart from the pack and improve the functioning of a cross-disciplinary team.
Also, writing becomes easier for math-minded people if we can find the patterns in language.
