Texas to Florida: 8 days with nothing.
We have moved from Texas to Florida. I start my time as a fellow with the NASA Postdoctoral Program at Kennedy Space Center later this month. We are so excited about this opportunity! But there's a lot that goes in to moving a family. I am glad that we came early so we can get our lives in order before I dive back into research full-time.
Our moving truck was delayed and won't arrive for several days, yet we decided to move into our new home anyway.
We have made it 4 days - halfway through our 8 days with nothing. I say nothing, but it's not really nothing. We had a stool, now we have 3 folding chairs, too. We have clothing, pillows, bedding, and towels. We have our usual art and school supplies. We have our absolute favorite books. We purchased a mattress topper and we are borrowing a couple of mats for the kids to sleep on. We have all the things that we brought in our cars, we have all of the appliances that we would expect to have in a modern townhouse. We just don't have any of our furniture, kitchen stuff, and toys.
It is harder to keep our clothing organized with no furniture.
We have been slowly finding homes for the few things that we did bring, using existing shelving, and it has gotten much less chaotic. But it's still very easy for the kids to make a mess of things, even with just one stuffed animal each. The art supplies and legos make the biggest messes.
Tech Detox:
My phone died, so I have been spending less time with social media.
During the road trip we found ourselves using tablets far too often with the kids. It was driving us insane to hear their games. They were mostly educational, but it still was not healthy for them to have so much screen time. They were extra irritable and they weren't sleeping well at night. Once we got here, we decided to detox. The kids haven't used their tablets at all in the past few days. We also have no TV. Their creativity is on fire. They are making up games to play together, they are acting out shows together, and they are perfecting various basic gymnastics skills with all of the open carpeting around the home.
It is an adventure. It feels good to slow down and focus on each other. There is less background noise, literally and figuratively. We'll see how the next few days go!
