Calm children learn faster

Have you noticed?
Calm children learn faster.
Focus comes with calm.
Knowledge comes with focus.

How do I construct calm moments?

Value calm.
Listen.
Communicate using a calming tone.
Connect in the calm.
Don't force it. Calm comes in fleeting moments at first.
Let go and them do their thing.
We notice and treasure unexpectedly calm moments together, so they are driven to create more.

That's it.
Want a calm child, too? Here's a good place to start.
Build trust.
Give them someone to depend on.
Make time for them to explore at their pace.
This will give them a base to build their calm.

Find calm. See what happens next.
Here is a photo of our children enjoying a calm moment in our garden. One is planting seeds, another is touching the soil with her toes, while another is looking intently at a sunflower bud. Ranging in ages from ages 2 to 8, all are fully and independently engaged in their activities while calmly occupying the same space.

Calm is found in the details.
Here is a calming exercise to try when outdoors with a child. Take a moment to focus on something you can see, smell, touch, taste, or hear. Find some detail in your surroundings. Give yourself a minute (or ten) to observe. Then reflect together on those details.
