Counting with Beads

Counting with Beads
We love counting with strings of beads. Here is a brief introduction to a few activities we do with simple wooden beads.

Small to Big
Here is a brief video lesson that gives an introduction to number beads and we organize them from smallest to biggest!

Crafting and Beads
We also like making strings of play-doh and organizing them by size alongside our number beads.
Beads to Numerals
Here is how we introduced our child to what numbers looked like, by matching counting beads to sandpaper numbers.
Reading and Counting
When we learn to read, our number beads come into play again. Here are strings of counting beads beside little cards where we wrote out numbers from zero to ten.
Playlist of Lessons
I put together a playlist of lessons using beads called Beads for Math on YouTube. Here is a link to the playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG4HgpTUE1gCP0Des6CK7YPWyQ8RKdvAF

Crafting Your Own Beads
We bought a big pack of wooden beads and some yarn, and we strung these beads on the yarn ourselves. It was really fun. Along the way, we made patterns and sorted beads by type. Some are round, some have ridges, others are square. Some are dark, others are light. Some are big and some are tiny.
So fun! I encourage you to make your own, too!
