Diapering: Cloth for Kids

I have a dirty secret to tell you.
We didn't tell many people when we were doing it, because it usually grossed them out.

But we did it. And now I want to talk about it.

This post is all about Diapers.
We used cloth for our kids.
They worked well for us.

Let me be honest with you: we bought more disposable diapers than I can count. I am no cloth fanatic. There are plenty of situations where disposable just worked better for everyone. But not always, and not even often.

In our changing area, alongside those high -tech disposable things, we always had our cloth diapers, too. And now at the end, I look back and I am glad we invested in some.

When I was pregnant with our first, I sewed diapers as I was nesting. She wore them. But mine wore out too quickly, so for our next two, we bought snap covers and fillers, and they worked the whole time.

Here's a picture of our children exploring in the front garden. Our youngest is wearing cloth.
Economical
For the cost of one big box of disposable diapers, we bought six cloth diapers. Then when those worked out well for us, we got more. A dozen diapers and fillers were all that we really needed.
Wash, dry, reuse
Here is a picture of cloth diaper shells and fillers drying on a bamboo rack in our garden. Some are thick bamboo filler pads and others are traditional cotton pre-fold. I won't say that I loved washing the diapers, but it definitely motivated us adults to redirect the kids to the toilet to poop!
Reliable
Our cloth diapers have always been there for us. Reliable, easy to put on, easy to wash. It was honestly fun to track her growth based on the snaps I used to secure them.

Adaptable
Here's a picture of two diapers side by side, one on the smallest and one on the largest snap size. They make even smaller ones, but we don't have any now.
Unexpected Attachment
Now that our littlest is 3, and regularly wearing underwear, I am ready to move on from these diapers. So last night I went to pack them up, and she... She wouldn't let me!

She loves them too much, and somehow these pants that fit her when she was so tiny still fit her now. As she didn't want to let them go, it brought back memories.
Sad memories like the endless diaper rashes when daycare wouldn't let us use anything other than disposable. The shock in the daycare workers' eyes when they told me that the cloth worked and her rash was gone. Laughter as they considered getting some for their children.

Happy memories of watching her crawling then walking the stairs in these diapers. Watching her toddle around the garden and house with them.

What's Next?
She isn't done yet with these diapers. And maybe I shouldn't be done with them either.

What do you do with your cloth diapers when you have finished with them?

Do you have any advice for helping her part ways with these comfy soft things?

What About Space?
Yes, astronauts sometimes wear diapers. Especially when they go on a spacewalk.
They call their diapers "Maximum Absorbency Garments", MAG for short.
Here is a picture of one.
