KNOTS - Ancient HISTORY of America
Ancient Knot Math
Have you ever considered using string as a computer? You can!
A long time ago people who lived in the Andes Mountains developed a system to communicate about math using knots. Here is a beautiful picture of a Peruvian person holding one of these string knot computers, called a Quipu.
The image comes from this website about Peru: https://peru.info/en-us/talent/news/6/24/quipu--discover-the-mysteries-of-the-inca-method-of-recording-information
Here is a link to a plain and simple piece in the Princeton Museum of Art.
I also like their description. https://artmuseum.princeton.edu/collections/objects/33468
Here is a lesson on working out the math behind the quipu from Mathispower4u on YouTube. https://youtu.be/EYq-VtyAd2s?si=0bhB2mlwYLFGTO8H We love learning about knots.
What else can we learn to do with knots?
