Exploring Our Senses

Let's explore our senses!
Let's think about how we use each of our senses. Here is a picture introducing this lesson. It says 5 senses / 5 Sentidos.
There are lots of links to videos in this lesson, including a story, a news article, and a NASA video.

Can you think of our 5 senses?
Here are the 5 we thought of. Maybe you will word them differently.

Touch
Taste
Smell
See
Hear

What parts of our bodies help us with each sense?

Skin
Mouth
Nose
Eyes
Ears

We made some cards to match our body parts to our senses. We also made them in Spanish, and a picture card for each. We can play memory matching games with these cards.

Here is a picture of some of our cards.
Story Time
We found a great story that explores our senses through a trip to the ocean. The book is called Hello Ocean. Here is a link to us reading the book.

This book is in Spanish, too. Here is a video of someone reading it in both English and Spanish. I love her voice, maybe you will, too.

Here is a list of words to look out for as you read and listen to this book.

Looks / Vistas
Hear / Escucho
Sounds / Sonidos
Touch / Toco
Feels / Sentir
Smell / Huelo
Smells / Olores
Taste / Pruebo
Tastes / Sabores

Senses in the News
The Nobel prize in Medicine was just awarded to scientists who discovered the mechanism behind the sense of touch.

Here is a link to the press release about the prize.

They used capsaicin to uncover some of these processes. Capsaicin is responsible for the heat in chile peppers.

Senses in Space
How are Astronauts' senses impacted by the unique stresses of microgravity that they encounter in spaceflight?

NASA made a great video about it. Here's a link to the video.

We're growing peppers right now on the International Space Station to give those astronauts some spicy fresh flavors that they crave.

Here's a link to a news article about that as well.
